Priest’s crown, Ethiopia

This ‘crown’ consists of three plates of incised tin riveted together.

Ornaments of silver are suspended from piercings in the lower rim. These rattle and chime as the priest moves, announcing his arrival during solemn processions on feast days such as Timkat (Epiphany), Easter and Christmas. Images of such crowns have also featured on Ethiopian national coins.

Donated by Wilfred Thesiger in 1995. Find out more information about Wilfred Thesiger in Africa
