Ordering new photography of collections
Please allow as much advance notice as possible; the Museum is a research and teaching department of the University of Oxford and cannot supply or create new images of its collections at very short notice.
Important information regarding access to research collections in 2024-5
Please note that our off-site stores (object collections only) will not be accessible for parts of 2024-5 due to a major store move. We will advise you as to whether this is likely to impact your photographic services enquiry when you get in touch. Please also be aware that these dates might change slightly depending on the progress of the move project.
Using existing images
Existing images of the collections can be viewed via the Museum's online collections databases.
For personal and teaching use
Screen quality images can be taken directly from the Museum databases, for personal use, private study, academic theses and student essays that are not being published, and free educational lectures or classes, in accordance with Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, meaning that you are free to share the material but must give appropriate credit to the Pitt Rivers Museum.
For publication and exhibition
If you would like to reproduce an image of our collections online or in print, please complete a publication license application (linked below) with as much information as possible and send it to photographic.services@prm.ox.ac.uk. All images are supplied in digital format, either as TIFF or JPEG files. We aim to process all orders within 30 days.
Order prints
Selected images from the historic photograph collection are available for order online as framed or unframed prints delivered to your door. A selection of around 700 images is also available to order online from the Bridgeman Art Library. These images have all been pre-cleared for editorial use.
Bespoke photography
Where no suitable image of an object exists, we can produce new high-quality photography of the majority of objects in our collections. If you would like to order new photography, please complete the appropriate licence application form below and send it to photographic.services@prm.ox.ac.uk. Please note this will incur a minimum additional cost of £15 per image, and there may be a delay beyond 30 days for processing these requests.
